![]() ![]() It isn't as if the author has been dormant. The Winter Vault, that much anticipated second novel, is finally in bookstores. You can't formulate a question in the same way. The characters allow you to get close viscerally to an idea. Fiction allows you to embody certain ideas and give them an emotional reality. If we don't believe it somehow viscerally, we don't really take it in. "I've said this before – and I mean it strongly – an abstract concept or a moral issue has to be connected to feeling. That's one thing that appeals to me very much about the novel form. "You have time to go into certain questions that are painful or difficult or complicated. "It's a fantastic privilege to spend three or four hundred pages with a reader," says Michaels of her initiation into the novelist's club. Even before the unexpected, runaway success of her 1996 debut novel Fugitive Pieces, Toronto poet Anne Michaels already knew she would write another. ![]()
